1. Select optimum room for smoke alarm
It is important the smoke alarm is installed in the optimum location of the home. We recommend installing a smoke alarm in the hallway, each bedroom and the living areas.
A single smoke alarm – install in the hallway
At a minimum, in Australia, a hardwired smoke alarm should be placed between possible fire sources and bedrooms such as a hallway or stairway. At least one wired smoke alarm should be fitted on each floor. A battery powered smoke alarm may only be used if it is not possible to install a wired smoke alarm as explained here.
2+ smoke alarms – install in hallway, bedrooms & living area
The Australian Fire Service recommends a long life photoelectric smoke alarm should be installed in each bedroom and living area in addition to the wired smoke alarm in the hallway.
2. Install smoke alarms on the ceiling
CAVIUS smoke alarms should only be installed on ceilings. By installing your smoke alarms on the ceiling, you will receive your earliest detection and provide valuable moments in the event of a fire in your home. Install on the ceiling and ensure it is 300-500mm away from the wall. Do not place on the walls, or in the corners of the room or at the apex of a ceiling.
3. Affix smoke alarm to the ceiling
Hold the mounted base against the ceiling and mark the screw holes with a pencil. Remove the mounting base and pre-drill the holes. Screw the mounting base into the ceiling. Not too tight. Line up the smoke alarm and twist clockwise into place.
4. Test your smoke alarm after installation
Wait 5- 8 seconds for the alarm to power up. Push the test button. Be warned, it’s loud!
